Valmaine Toki: “It’s a flawed process for Indigenous people.”

Law professor Valmaine Toki, speaking at the 3 December 2025 launch of the Geneva Centre on Knowledge Governance, discusses the challenges with the “flawed process” of Indigenous people’s participation in World Intellectual Property Organization processes that govern the knowledge they steward. As Indigenous communities are not member states, they have limited capacity to directly influence the legal language that will eventually govern access to their knowledge.
